L-Theanine is an amino acid, naturally found in green tea in quantities of 1 – 3%. It has been used historically as a relaxing agent, but has also been reported to have cardiovascular, neurological, and oncological effects. When combined with green tea extract this formula provides antioxidant protection and potential synergistic benefits by reducing additional oxidation caused by stress.
L-Theanine or 5-N-ethyl-glutamine is an amino acid derivative of glutamic acid, extracted from green tea (and occasionally mushrooms). It's thought that theanine exhibits calming effects by increasing levels of GABA and serotonin, as it readily crosses the blood-brain barrier. Green tea contains polyphenols such as flavanols, flavandiols, flavonoids, and phenolic acids. Flavanols including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC) are all referred to as catechins. Catechins seem to be responsible for many of the proposed antioxidant benefits of green tea. Some evidence suggest that theanine might prevent the development of atherosclerosis by inhibiting lipid peroxidation of low-density lipoproteins and preliminary studies also show that the flavonoids found in green tea might reduce lipoprotein oxidation. This makes NOW®’s combination of l-theanine and green tea an important natural formulation for reducing oxidative stress of the cardiovascular system. This is a non-caffeinated formulation to ensure there are no blood pressure increases.
