NOW® uses only Carnipure™, a special grade of L-Carnitine (L-carnitine tartrate) and the most researched form and brand, manufactured by the Swiss life sciences company Lonza.
L-Carnitine occurs naturally in the body (about 20-25 grams). Some food provides L-Carnitine, such as red meat (e.g. lamb, venison and beef) which is particularly rich in L-Carnitine; Fish, poultry, milk and breast milk which contain smaller amounts, and foods of plant origin which contain very little, if any. On average, we consume about 100-300 mg dietary L-Carnitine every day. Organs and cells with a high energy requirement such as the heart, muscles, immune cells, brain and nerves require the highest levels of L-Carnitine and cannot function properly without an adequate supply. The human body is able to produce small quantities of L-Carnitine, if precursors (two essential amino acids, lysine and methionine) and cofactors (vitamins C, B3, B6 and iron) are readily available. An inadequate supply of any of these nutrients restricts the body’s ability to produce L-Carnitine. L-Carnitine plays an essential role in the body’s energy metabolism, particularly in the transport of long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane. Researchers have observed a decrease in the production of free radicals, less tissue damage and reduced muscle soreness after exercise in recreationally trained athletes following 3 weeks of L-Carnitine tartrate supplementation. These effects were found to be dose-dependent, present both in young and old, male and female subjects. Supplementation with L-Carnitine tartrate induces an increase in muscle oxygen consumption, providing a potential mechanism for reduced hypoxic stress following resistance exercise.
Directions
Adult Dosage: Take two capsules twice daily with meals. Consult a health care practitioner for use beyond 3 weeks.

Mild gastrointestinal symptoms (transient nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, and diarrhoea) have been reported. Low incidences of seizures have been reported with oral doses in individuals with or without pre-existing seizure disorders. Do not use if you have primary systemic L-Carnitine deficiency or secondary L-Carnitine deficiency (inborn errors of metabolism) for which levocarnitine supplementation is prescribed and/or monitored by a healthcare practitioner. Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
