Suggested Use

This formula containing 650 mg of plant sterol esters (from Brassica napus oil) inhibit uptake of both dietary and naturally produced cholesterol from the intestines. For an increased stability, tocopherols have been added to the formula. A daily intake of at least 1.3g of plant sterol esters, in two meals, may reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol.

Phytosterols are naturally found in very small amounts in all types of unrefined plant oils such as olive oil, corn oil and sunflower oil. Phytosterols lower cholesterol by blocking its absorption from the intestine. The most common type of cholesterol drugs are statins, which lower the cholesterol amounts synthesized by the body itself. Phytosterols are also beneficial in that there are no direct drug-to-drug interactions for patients on other cholesterol and cardiovascular medications.

Typically a significant cholesterol reduction can be achieved in 16 weeks by taking the required amount of 650mg phytosterols twice daily with meals. Cholesterol must be kept at the reduced level for 12 months to achieve a reduction in the risk of heart disease. Phytosterols are one of the only remedies for reducing cholesterol that are safe for diabetics. Phytosterols also work on a low cholesterol diet, because most of the cholesterol we absorb from the intestine, we produce as a part of our digestive juices, which are used to digest fat. This means that phytosterols work even if the diet contains no cholesterol at all.
