Astragalus is an effective, alternative remedy for cold and flu season. In contrast to echinacea, long-term use of astragalus does not appear to suppress immune function.
Astragalus root (“huangqi” in Chinese) has been revered in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries as a superior adaptogen and restorative tonic. It is considered a sweet, warming herb with effects on the lung, spleen, and heart meridians. An adaptogen can increase general resistance to stress and disease and normalize disturbances in homeostasis produced by pathophysiological or environmental stimuli. Astragalus root is used extensively in TCM to augment the Qi (vital energy) for spleen deficiency and deficiencies with spontaneous sweating. Traditionally, astragalus is combined with other adaptogenic herbs, such as ginseng, angelica, or licorice, and administered as a decoction, which is a strong tea.
